Story order tips

Fiction path by Emergence Day (A.E.): E-Day → Judgment → Tactics → Gears of War / Reloaded → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5. Release order still plays best for first-timers—story order spoils Locust mysteries early if you start with prequels.

  • Full lore path: E-Day → Judgment → Tactics → Reloaded → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5
  • Core Marcus/JD path without prequels: Reloaded → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5
  • Judgment & Tactics fill early Locust War—optional but enriching
  • On Story order, later entries may be hidden—reveal when ready or use Show all spoilers

FAQ

Release vs story order, Reloaded vs original, E-Day, Judgment, Tactics, and optional DLC.

Release order

Release order is when each Gears game launched in the US (2006–2026)—including Judgment, Tactics, Reloaded, and upcoming E-Day. Story order follows Emergence Day chronology: E-Day → Judgment → Tactics → Gears of War / Reloaded → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5. Prequels spoil some Locust mysteries—most newcomers still prefer Release order first.

Recommended: Gears of War: Reloaded → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5. Then optional Judgment and Gears Tactics. Lore-first (after E-Day launches Oct 6, 2026): E-Day → Judgment → Tactics → Reloaded → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5. You do not need Ultimate Edition if you own Reloaded.

Story & eras

E-Day is a prequel set on Emergence Day (0 A.E.)—fourteen years before Gears of War—following younger Marcus and Dom. It is scheduled for October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC (Game Pass day one). On Story order it is first; on Release it is last. Newcomers can still start with Reloaded and play E-Day later.

Judgment (weeks after E-Day) and Gears Tactics (~1 A.E., Gabe Diaz) fill the early Locust War. They are optional for the Marcus/JD shooter path but enrich lore—especially Tactics if you care about Kait's family before Gears 4–5. Best after the original trilogy on a first pass, or after E-Day on Story order.

Remasters & editions

Reloaded (August 26, 2025) is the modern remaster of the 2006 campaign—Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5. It replaces the 2006 original and the 2015 Ultimate Edition for most players. This page keeps the 2006 row for Release history; Ultimate Edition is FAQ-only. One Story slot—do not play all three for plot.
