Release & story order
Outer Wilds game and DLC order
Use this page for the Outer Wilds timeline—Mobius Digital’s exploration mystery and its expansion, kept deliberately spoiler-light. Release lists US ship dates for Outer Wilds (May 28, 2019) and Echoes of the Eye (September 28, 2021). Story is simple on purpose: finish the base investigation first, then start Echoes; the DLC assumes you already understand the solar system’s rhythms and will spoil less wonder if you rush it early. Essentials covers base-first or full-with-Echoes. This page never walks endings, statue puzzles, or late revelations—only play order. Curious neighbors: Hades, Returnal, Death Stranding, Control, and Alan Wake.
Pick your path:
Where to start
Pick Base first if you only own or only want Outer Wilds right now, or Full with Echoes once you are ready to continue into Echoes of the Eye after the base investigation. Two paths only—there is no recommended Echoes-first route.
- Newcomers → base-first until the main investigation feels complete
- Owners of Archaeologist Edition → full-with-echoes after base credits/comfort stop
- Never start Echoes as your first Outer Wilds hours
- Stuck mid-mystery → tiny hints beat full guides; keep wonder intact
Release order
When each Outer Wilds entry shipped in the US—Outer Wilds (May 28, 2019) and the Echoes of the Eye expansion (September 28, 2021). Release order matches the only recommended play path: complete the base game’s investigation before installing or starting the DLC, so discoveries stay yours.
- Always finish the base game before Echoes of the Eye
- Buy Archaeologist / complete editions only after you know you want the DLC
- Avoid guides until you are truly stuck—wonder is the product
- Skip cost → starting Echoes mid-base blurs which mysteries belong to which package
Story order tips
Soft fiction path is investigation continuity, not a numbered sequel cast reset: explore and learn in the base solar system until you reach a natural stopping point, then begin Echoes of the Eye as an added mystery that expects base-game fluency. This Story tab stays spoiler-light—no endings, no late-game reveals, only “base then Echoes” sequencing.
- Base investigation first—Echoes is post-foundation DLC
- Do not treat Echoes as a tutorial remix of the opening hours
- Keep endings and late reveals offline; this page will not list them
- On Story order, later entries may be hidden—reveal when ready or use Show all spoilers

Outer Wilds
PCPS4PS5Xbox OneXbox Series X|SSwitchExplorationMysteryMainlineOuter Wilds (May 28, 2019, US) is a solar-system exploration mystery about curiosity, time loops, and learning by flying—spoiler-light on purpose. Finish this investigation before Echoes of the Eye; the base game is the entire foundation.
- Overview
- Knowledge-driven adventure where your brain is the progression system—no combat grind, just maps you internalize. Set the tone every Outer Wilds discussion still answers: wonder first, guides last.
- In-game setting
- The full base investigation. Next package is Echoes of the Eye only after you are comfortable stopping the main mystery. This note deliberately avoids ending talk.
- Should you play it?
- Required on every Essentials path. Do not skip or rush into DLC early—you pay with confused discoveries and spoiled pacing, not a soft technical lock.
- Release date
- US May 28, 2019 on PC and Xbox; PlayStation and Switch versions followed in later windows. Archaeologist Edition bundles often add the DLC—confirm before buying twice.

Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye
PCPS4PS5Xbox OneXbox Series X|SSwitchExplorationExpansionExpansionEchoes of the Eye (September 28, 2021, US) is the major expansion—new mysteries that assume you already speak the base game’s language. Start it after Outer Wilds; this page stays spoiler-light and will not outline late reveals.
- Overview
- Adds a substantial new investigation layer while preserving Outer Wilds’ knowledge-as-progress design. Built as post-foundation DLC, not a replacement tutorial for first-time players.
- In-game setting
- Play after finishing the base game’s investigation. Story-tab treats it as the continuation beat; Release places it second for the same reason. No ending spoilers here.
- Should you play it?
- Required on full-with-echoes. Skip on base-first until you are ready—starting Echoes early muddies which clues belong to the base mystery.
- Release date
- US September 28, 2021 across platforms that already had Outer Wilds; often sold standalone or inside Archaeologist / complete bundles.

DLC timing
After you have finished—or at least reached a satisfying stopping point in—the base game’s main investigation. Echoes assumes you already understand how Outer Wilds teaches information. Starting it in your first hours mixes clue streams and softens the base game’s wonder.
Stay off ending discussions, “best planet order” spoiler threads, and unsolicited tips from friends. This timeline intentionally uses spoiler-light wording and will not outline late reveals. If you must use a hint, prefer tiny progressive hints over full walkthroughs.
