Pilotwings from the 1991 SNES launch through Pilotwings 64 on Nintendo 64 and Pilotwings Resort on 3DS (2011)—US release dates, the flight-license trilogy, and FAQ for the long hiatus and re-releases.

Release order

When Nintendo shipped each flight-school chapter—Pilotwings on SNES (1991), Pilotwings 64 on N64 (1996), then Pilotwings Resort on 3DS (2011). Virtual Console and Switch Online ports are FAQ-only.

Story order tips

No serial plot—Story rows mirror Release as a pilot-training lineage (light plane → hang glider → jetpack across eras). Order is optional for gameplay.

Release vs story order, the 15-year gap, no Wii entry, and where to start.

Release order

Release order and Story order share the same three rows: Pilotwings (1991, SNES)Pilotwings 64 (1996, N64)Pilotwings Resort (2011, 3DS). There is no serial plot—Story rows label the flight-training era only. Virtual Console and Switch Online ports are FAQ-only, not extra rows.

Newcomers can start with Pilotwings Resort (3DS)—self-contained and uses familiar Wuhu Island. Retro fans play SNES → N64 → Resort in Release order. SNES and N64 via Switch Online or emulation; Resort needs a 3DS cartridge (eShop closed March 2023).

Story & canon

After Pilotwings 64 (1996), the series went dormant for 15 years until Pilotwings Resort (2011) on 3DS. Nintendo skipped GameCube and Wii for a mainline PilotwingsResort finally revived the license-badge structure on handheld.

Ports & rereleases

No mainline Pilotwings on Wii. Wii Sports Resort (2009) shares Wuhu Island and flight-adjacent Air Sports, but it is not a Pilotwings entry—no Release or Story row here. Pilotwings Resort (2011, 3DS) reuses Wuhu Island as the official series return.
