FAQ
Release vs story order, the 15-year gap, no Wii entry, and where to start.
Release order
Release order and Story order share the same three rows: Pilotwings (1991, SNES) → Pilotwings 64 (1996, N64) → Pilotwings Resort (2011, 3DS). There is no serial plot—Story rows label the flight-training era only. Virtual Console and Switch Online ports are FAQ-only, not extra rows.
Newcomers can start with Pilotwings Resort (3DS)—self-contained and uses familiar Wuhu Island. Retro fans play SNES → N64 → Resort in Release order. SNES and N64 via Switch Online or emulation; Resort needs a 3DS cartridge (eShop closed March 2023).
Story & canon
After Pilotwings 64 (1996), the series went dormant for 15 years until Pilotwings Resort (2011) on 3DS. Nintendo skipped GameCube and Wii for a mainline Pilotwings—Resort finally revived the license-badge structure on handheld.
Ports & rereleases
No mainline Pilotwings on Wii. Wii Sports Resort (2009) shares Wuhu Island and flight-adjacent Air Sports, but it is not a Pilotwings entry—no Release or Story row here. Pilotwings Resort (2011, 3DS) reuses Wuhu Island as the official series return.
