Ace Combat games in order

Use this page for the ace combat timeline—Namco / Bandai Namco’s arcade flight saga from Air Combat (1995) through Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve (October 2, 2026). Release lists mainline Strangereal ship dates so PS1 origins still arrive before the PS2 classics and the 2019–2026 HD revival. Story follows Strangereal wars: Belkan War (Zero) first, then Usean conflicts through the Lighthouse War, Aurelian War, Wings of Theve, and finally Electrosphere in 2040. Real-world games (Assault Horizon, Joint Assault, Infinity) stay FAQ-only. Military neighbors: Call of Duty, Metal Gear Solid, and Halo.

Updated September 2026

Where to start

Pick Modern HD for 7 → Zero → 8, PS2 classics for 04 → 5 → Zero, or Full Strangereal for every Release title on this page. Real-world spin-offs stay hidden from Essentials.

  • New on PC/PS5 → Modern HD path into Ace Combat 8
  • Story fans → play Zero early even on Release-minded runs
  • Electrosphere last on Story—do not open with AC3

Release order

When each mainline Strangereal game shipped—from Air Combat (1995) through Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve (October 2, 2026), including PSP Ace Combat X. Best 2026 first play: Ace Combat 7, then backfill Zero / 04 / 5, or ride Release if you want every arcade generation in order.

  • Modern first → Ace Combat 7, then Zero / 04 / 5 before Ace Combat 8
  • Full Release → Air Combat through 8 (PS1 → PS2 → 360 → HD)
  • Lore binge → switch to Story (Zero first, Electrosphere last)
  • Skip real-world spin-offs → Assault Horizon / Joint Assault / Infinity are FAQ-only
Story order tips

Strangereal war years: Zero (1995 Belkan) → Air Combat (1995) → Ace Combat 2 (1998) → 04 (2004–05) → 5 (2010) → 6 (2015–16) → 7 (2019) → X (2020) → 8 (~2029–30) → 3 Electrosphere (2040). Same games; 3 moves from early Release to last Story.

  • 1998–2010 → AC2 → 04 → 5
  • 2015–2020 → 6 → 7 → X

Release order

  1. Air Combat

    Air Combat

    PlayStationMainlineStrangerealFlight

Namco’s 1995 PlayStation debut—then often titled Ace Combat abroad—drops you into the Skully Islands insurrection with arcade missile locks and branching mission paths. The series’ DNA: named ace pilots, radio chatter, and war as spectacle.

    Overview
Air Combat invents the Ace Combat fantasy: you are a silent ace in a fictional war, not a mil-sim checklist. Super-plane unlocks and cinematic mission briefings set the template Zero and 7 still remix. Japan PS1 launch mid-1995; Western localizations followed.
    In-game setting
Release opener. Story parks it in 1995 beside Zero’s Belkan War—concurrent Strangereal chaos, different conflict. Modern players often sample Zero or 7 first, then backfill this PS1 origin.
    Should you play it?
Completionists and historians start here on Release. Newcomers in 2026 can postpone Air Combat until after Ace Combat 7 or Zero—controls and visuals are period PS1. Not required before 04/5/7.
    Release date
Japan PlayStation release June 30, 1995 (Air Combat / Ace Combat naming varies by region). Later classic-catalog appearances differ by territory.
  2. Ace Combat 2

    Ace Combat 2

    PlayStationMainlineStrangerealFlight

1997 Usean coup d’état—more missions, wingmen, and the Scarface One legend on PS1. Assault Horizon Legacy (2011) later remakes this war for 3DS with modern aircraft lists.

    Overview
Ace Combat 2 expands branching routes and ace rivalry while keeping arcade readability. Story-wise it is the 1998 Usean rebellion; Release ships it second after Air Combat. Legacy is the easier modern door into the same conflict.
    In-game setting
Release second. Story after Zero / Air Combat’s 1995 block. Prefer Assault Horizon Legacy on modern hardware if PS1 originals are painful—FAQ covers the remake choice.
    Should you play it?
Watch/play after Air Combat on a full Release run. Skip early if you only want HD Strangereal (04→5→Zero→6→7→8).
    Release date
Japan PlayStation May 30, 1997; Western Ace Combat 2 releases followed. 3DS remake Assault Horizon Legacy ships 2011.
  3. Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere

    Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere

    PlayStationMainlineStrangerealFlight

2040 corporate war between General Resource and Neucom—anime cutscenes, multiple endings, and a future Strangereal that Release drops early but Story saves for last. Japan-only full narrative; export cuts were thinner.

    Overview
Electrosphere is the franchise’s sci-fi swing: megacorps, COFFIN interfaces, and radical branching. Canon sits in 2040—after Ace Combat 8’s 2029–30 war on Story—despite 1999 ship date. Fan translations restored the deeper JP campaign for modern players.
    In-game setting
Release third chronologically by ship date; Story endpoint after Ace Combat 8. Do not Story-start here—future tech spoils the tone of 04–7. Play after the modern numbered arc if you care about Electrosphere’s endings.
    Should you play it?
Release completionists play it after Ace Combat 2. Story-first players save it until after 7/X/8. Export “Ace Combat 3” is abridged—seek the JP/fan-translated path for the real script.
    Release date
Japan PlayStation May 27, 1999. Western SKUs cut story content; treat JP/fan translation as the definitive Electrosphere campaign.
  4. Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies

    Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies

    PlayStation 2MainlineStrangerealFlight

PS2 breakthrough: Mobius 1 vs Yellow Squadron in the Usean Continental War (2003–05 fiction)—Stonehenge railguns, radio-drama civilians, and the series’ most quoted ace rivalry. Still the best “start here” classic for many fans.

    Overview
Shattered Skies locks the modern Ace Combat formula: silent protagonist, memorable enemy ace squadron, and superweapons as mission setpieces. PS2 hardware leap made cratered cities and long missile tracks feel theatrical.
    In-game setting
Release fourth; Story after the 1990s wars (Zero/Air Combat/AC2). Ideal first Strangereal campaign if you want pre-7 history without PS1 jank. Follow with 5 or jump to Zero for Belkan context.
    Should you play it?
Strong 2026 starter on Release after skipping PS1, or mid-Story after 1998 Usean coup. Required emotional homework before Ace Combat 5’s world feels fully peopled.
    Release date
Japan PlayStation 2 September 13, 2001; North America October 2001. Later PS2 classics catalogs vary.
  5. Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

    PlayStation 2MainlineStrangerealFlight

Wardog / Razgriz Squadron in the 2010 Circum-Pacific War—betrayal, the Arkbird, and “the unsung war” radio mythos. Arcade Mode also sketches the 2006 Free Erusea uprising between 04 and 5’s main campaign.

    Overview
Unsung War deepens wingman drama and Osean/Yuktobanian politics. Story sits in 2010 after 04’s Continental War; Release follows 04 on PS2. Often ranked with Zero as peak classic storytelling.
    In-game setting
Release after 04. Story after 04 (and optional arcade Free Erusea beat). Play before 6/7 for shared Osea–Erusea texture; Zero can come before or after 5 on Release without breaking 5’s plot.
    Should you play it?
Core Strangereal pillar. Newcomers doing HD-only can still play 5 via PS2/emulation after 04 or after Zero. Hide optional real-world spin-offs—this stays mainline.
    Release date
    Japan PlayStation 2 October 21, 2004; North America October 25, 2004.
  6. Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

    PlayStation 2MainlineStrangerealFlight

1995 Belkan War through Cipher’s Ace Style morality—Pixy, the demon of the round table, and nuclear shadows that haunt every later Osean tale. Story chronology’s true opening act despite a mid-2000s ship date.

    Overview
Zero is the franchise’s character thesis: three Ace Styles reshaping cutscenes and rival fates. Belkan War lore becomes the backbone for 5 and 7’s politics. 2026 Ace Combat 8 preorders even bundle a Zero port—Bandai Namco knows this is the origin myth.
    In-game setting
Release after 5 on PS2 timelines; Story first (1995) beside Air Combat. Best lore-first opener if you can handle PS2-era mechanics. Play before 7 for Belkan callbacks to sting.
    Should you play it?
Essentials Strangereal path includes Zero even if you skip Air Combat/AC2. On Release it arrives after 5; on Story it leads the list.
    Release date
Japan PlayStation 2 March 23, 2006; North America September 2006. Modern ports tied to Ace Combat 8 preorder bundles in 2026.
  7. Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

    PSPPortableStrangerealFlight

PSP Aurelian War (2020 fiction)—Leasath invasion, Gleipnir airborne fortress, and branching mission maps in your pocket. Ace Combat Xi (2009) is the phone prequel sketch; keep Xi FAQ-optional.

    Overview
Skies of Deception proves Strangereal works on portable hardware: ace rivalries, fortress bosses, and South-Usean geopolitics. Story sits in 2020 after Ace Combat 7’s 2019 Lighthouse War.
    In-game setting
Release late 2006 after Zero. Story after 7, before Electrosphere / beside the run-up to Ace Combat 8’s later decade. Optional if you only want home-console numbered entries—but it is canon Strangereal.
    Should you play it?
Completionist Release includes X. Story-first players insert it after 7. Skip Xi/Advance/Northern Wings unless you are a lore maximalist (FAQ).
    Release date
PSP October 24, 2006 (Japan); North America October 2006. PlayStation Network classics availability varies.
  8. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation

    Xbox 360MainlineStrangerealFlight

Xbox 360 exclusive Emmeria–Estovakia war (2015–16)—huge allied assaults, Nimbus missiles, and Talisman’s liberation campaign. Bridging chapter between 5’s 2010 war and 7’s 2019 Lighthouse War.

    Overview
Fires of Liberation scales Ace Combat into widescreen generational warfare—operation gauges, city assaults, and Estovakian aces. Backward-compatible / EA Play-era access differs by region; still the missing HD link for Strangereal completionists.
    In-game setting
Release after X on a 2006–07 shelf; Story after 5 and before 7 (2015–16 fiction). Play if you want the full 2010s war chain; skippable if you jump 5 → Zero → 7 → 8.
    Should you play it?
Include on Essentials full Strangereal path. Newcomers prioritizing 7/8 can postpone 6, then backfill when curious about Emmeria.
    Release date
Xbox 360 October 23, 2007 (North America); Japan later in 2007. Xbox backward compatibility status has changed over time—check current storefronts.
  9. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

    Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

    PlayStation 4Xbox OnePCMainlineStrangerealFlight

2019 Lighthouse War—Trigger vs Erusea, drone swarms, and the space elevator as superweapon stage. The modern HD gateway: VR missions sketch 2014 Free Erusea; DLC expands the 2019 campaign.

    Overview
Skies Unknown revives Strangereal for current consoles with cloud tech, drone ethics, and fan-service Belkan ghosts. Best 2026 on-ramp before Ace Combat 8; story stands alone but rewards Zero/5 veterans.
    In-game setting
Release after the long 2010s gap (real-world spin-offs omitted here). Story 2019 after 6, before X’s 2020 Aurelian War. Start here if you want modern controls first, then backfill Zero/04/5.
    Should you play it?
Default 2026 first play on Essentials. Required before Ace Combat 8 for series momentum; not strictly required for 8’s plot if Bandai Namco keeps 8 approachable.
    Release date
Worldwide January 18, 2019 (PS4/Xbox One); PC later in 2019. VR and DLC missions optional but canon-flavored.
  10. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

    PlayStation 5Xbox Series X|SPCMainlineStrangerealFlight

October 2, 2026 mainline return—Unreal Engine 5 Strangereal war in the Sotoa–Usea conflict (~2029–30 fiction). Deluxe early access from September 29, 2026; preorders bundled Ace Combat Zero for new pilots.

    Overview
Wings of Theve is the first numbered home entry since 7, built by Bandai Namco Aces on UE5 with the Cloudly tech stack. Story chronology places it after X and before Electrosphere’s 2040 corporate war—future relative to 7, past relative to AC3.
    In-game setting
Current Release endpoint (ships days after this page’s September 2026 update). Story near the end, before Ace Combat 3. Play 7 first for modern series fluency; Zero helps for Belkan lore the marketing keeps pushing.
    Should you play it?
Essentials endpoint for 2026. Spoilers stay light pre-launch/early access. Real-world spin-offs (Assault Horizon, Joint Assault, Infinity) remain FAQ-only—not required for Wings of Theve.
    Release date
    Worldwide October 2, 2026 (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC/Steam). Deluxe early access September 29, 2026.

FAQ

Release vs Strangereal story, where to start in 2026, Ace Combat 8, Electrosphere last, and which spin-offs to skip.

Play order

Modern default: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown for current controls and the Lighthouse War, then Ace Combat Zero for Belkan lore, then Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve at launch.

If you love PS2-era storytelling, play 04 → 5 → Zero before or after 7. Full Release from Air Combat is for completionists comfortable with PS1 jank.

Yes. Release follows ship dates (Air Combat 1995 → … → Ace Combat 8 in 2026). Story follows Strangereal wars—Zero’s 1995 Belkan War opens, while Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere jumps to 2040 and lands last even though it shipped in 1999. First playthroughs usually stay near Release or the Modern HD essentials path; Story is the lore rewatch.

Strangereal

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2, 2026 (Deluxe early access September 29). It is the Release endpoint on this page. Story places its Sotoa–Usea war around 2029–2030—after Ace Combat X (2020) and before Electrosphere (2040). Preorders bundling Zero are a hint: Belkan lore still matters.

Because its canon sits in 2040 corporate warfare—decades after 7 and 8. Release shipped it in 1999, so it appears early on the Release tab. Play the JP/fan-translated campaign if you want the full branching script; Western cuts removed a lot of story.

Optional & spin-offs

No for Strangereal. Assault Horizon, Joint Assault, and Infinity use other settings (real-world or alternate). They stay FAQ-only here so the dual timeline stays Ace Combat’s Strangereal spine. Advance / Northern Wings / Xi are likewise optional lore footnotes.
