Dead Cells DLC and updates in order

Use this page for dead cells dlc order—Motion Twin’s roguelite from the 2018 1.0 launch through free Rise of the Giant and the paid packs (Bad Seed, Fatal Falls, The Queen and the Sea, Return to Castlevania). Release lists US/Steam ship dates so you know what each DLC added and when. Story is a spoiler-light suggested unlock / content path: clear the base island loop first, then layer free and paid biomes as they open mid- and late-run. Essentials covers base-first, full-DLC, or Castlevania-pack focus. Neighbors: Castlevania, Hades, Hollow Knight.

Updated September 2026

Where to start

Pick Base first if you only want the 2018 core until you understand the loop, Full DLC for every Release row including free and paid packs, or Castlevania pack when you already know the base game and mainly want the Konami crossover route enabled on top of a working install.

  • First week → base-first until Hand of the King
  • Completionists 2026 → full-dlc in Release order
  • Crossover fans → castlevania-pack after base comfort
  • Skip cost → skipping free Rise of the Giant softens late true-ending adjacent content

Release order

When each Dead Cells milestone shipped for players—Dead Cells 1.0 (August 7, 2018), free Rise of the Giant (March 28, 2019), The Bad Seed (February 11, 2020), Fatal Falls (January 26, 2021), The Queen and the Sea (January 6, 2022), and Return to Castlevania (March 6, 2023). Release order is the collector path for store pages and patch eras.

  • Newcomers → base 1.0 until you beat Hand of the King once
  • Free upgrade → install Rise of the Giant ASAP after that clear
  • Full package → add Bad Seed, Fatal Falls, Queen and the Sea, then Castlevania
  • Castlevania fans → enable Return to Castlevania when you want that route set
Story order tips

Suggested unlock path, spoiler-light: learn the base prison-to-island loop first, then install free Rise of the Giant once you have cleared the Hand of the King at least once, then add paid biomes (Bad SeedFatal FallsQueen and the Sea) as mid/late alternatives, and treat Return to Castlevania as a dense crossover pack you can enable whenever you want that route flavor.

  • Base loop first—do not buy every DLC on day one if you are learning weapons
  • Rise of the Giant gates some late content after a Hand of the King clear
  • Paid packs add alternate biomes and bosses; install when runs feel stale
  • On Story order, later entries may be hidden—reveal when ready or use Show all spoilers

Release order

  1. Dead Cells

    Dead Cells

    PCPS4Xbox OneSwitchRogueliteMainline1.0

Dead Cells left early access into 1.0 on August 7, 2018—Motion Twin’s metroidvania-roguelite about a headless prisoner looping a living island with permadeath runs, weapon blueprints, and Boss Cell difficulty. Still the required foundation every DLC hangs on.

    Overview
Roguelite runs with metroidvania route knowledge, color-coded weapon scaling, and a living island that reshuffles biomes while permanent unlocks stick between deaths. The 1.0 ship locked the grammar later DLC biomes still answer.
    In-game setting
Prisoner’s Quarters through the classic mid-island biomes and Hand of the King climax. Play this loop before treating paid DLC as mandatory homework—Story tab keeps the same base-first advice.
    Should you play it?
Required on every Essentials path. Buy base first; neighbors for run-based action: Hades and Hollow Knight.
    Release date
US/Steam 1.0 August 7, 2018 on PC with console versions in the same era; later mobile and next-gen ports expanded access.
  2. Dead Cells: Rise of the Giant

Dead Cells: Rise of the Giant

    PCPS4Xbox OneSwitchExpansionFreeExpansion

Rise of the Giant (March 28, 2019 on PC) is the thank-you free expansion—new mid/late biomes, the Giant boss, outfits, and harder endgame toys aimed at players who already cleared the Hand of the King. Install it; do not treat it as a paid Season Pass gate.

    Overview
Free high-level expansion that adds route branches and a major boss without asking for another purchase. It taught Motion Twin how post-1.0 Dead Cells would keep growing through DLC biomes.
    In-game setting
Cavern-adjacent and late-run content that opens after you have beaten the Hand of the King at least once. Story tab places it right after the base loop as the first recommended unlock.
    Should you play it?
Required on full-dlc; strongly recommended on base-first once you clear Hand of the King. Skipping it softens late true-ending adjacent toys.
    Release date
PC March 28, 2019; console staggered follow-ups in mid-2019. Free on most storefronts—confirm it is installed, not merely owned.
  3. Dead Cells: The Bad Seed

    Dead Cells: The Bad Seed

    PCPS4Xbox OneSwitchExpansionPaidBiomes

The Bad Seed (February 11, 2020) is the first major paid DLC—Arboretum, Morass, Nest, Mama Tick, and a pile of plant-horror weapons that slot into mid-run pathing. Best after you already enjoy the base loop and free Giant content.

    Overview
Paid biome pack that proves Dead Cells could keep selling route variety without resetting the roguelite fantasy. New biomes and a memorable tick boss expanded mid-game choices.
    In-game setting
Green-horror mid-island alternatives that sit beside classic biomes once owned. Story suggests installing after Rise of the Giant comfort, not on your first hour.
    Should you play it?
Required on full-dlc; optional on base-first until runs feel stale. Castlevania-pack players can still skip Bad Seed if budget is tight.
    Release date
US/Steam February 11, 2020 across major platforms that already had Dead Cells 1.0.
  4. Dead Cells: Fatal Falls

    Dead Cells: Fatal Falls

    PCPS4Xbox OneSwitchExpansionPaidBiomes

Fatal Falls (January 26, 2021) adds Fractured Shrines, Undying Shores, Mausoleum, and the Time Keeper–adjacent late pressure of new bosses and gear. Another paid route pack for players deep into Boss Cells.

    Overview
Second paid biome wave with shrine and undying themes that push vertical and timed fights. Keeps the “new paths, same run grammar” promise without rewriting the base game.
    In-game setting
Late-mid alternatives that reward players who already know classic biomes cold. Story places it after Bad Seed in suggested unlock order.
    Should you play it?
Required on full-dlc. Skip on a first learning week; buy when you want more route spice after Bad Seed.
    Release date
US/Steam January 26, 2021 multiplatform for existing Dead Cells owners.
  5. Dead Cells: The Queen and the Sea

Dead Cells: The Queen and the Sea

    PCPS4Xbox OneSwitchExpansionPaidEndgame

The Queen and the Sea (January 6, 2022) ships Infested Shipwreck, Lighthouse, and Crown content plus the Queen fight—late-game alternatives to High Peak Castle / Throne Room paths. Paid endgame flavor for veterans.

    Overview
Pirate-wreck and lighthouse biomes that give a true alternate climax route instead of only more mid-island corridors. Weapons and outfits keep the collector loop spinning.
    In-game setting
Endgame sea-route content after you are comfortable with Boss Cell pacing. Story lists it after Fatal Falls as the last Motion Twin–original paid pack before the Castlevania crossover.
    Should you play it?
Required on full-dlc. Optional until you want an alternate late climax; not a day-one buy for newcomers.
    Release date
US/Steam January 6, 2022 (not mid-2021—verify store pages if old guides still say July).
  6. Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania

    Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania

    PCPS4Xbox OneSwitchExpansionCrossoverPaid

Return to Castlevania (March 6, 2023) is the Konami crossover pack—Dracula’s castle biomes, Richter/Alucard toys, and soundtrack nostalgia layered onto Dead Cells runs. Dense, optional, and the usual 2026 “finish the store shelf” purchase.

    Overview
Licensed Castlevania biomes and gear that prove the island can host a full crossover fantasy without abandoning roguelite death loops. Biggest thematic swing of the paid DLC line.
    In-game setting
Castle route content you can enable once the base loop feels familiar. Story treats it as a flavor pack rather than a required lore chapter—see also Castlevania.
    Should you play it?
Required on full-dlc and castlevania-pack Essentials. Skip if you only want Motion Twin original biomes; buy if Belmont nostalgia is the point.
    Release date
US/Steam March 6, 2023 multiplatform as paid DLC for existing Dead Cells owners.
