FAQ
Release vs story order, DK64 placement, Tropical Freeze ports, and spin-offs.
Release order
For Donkey Kong Country they match: DKC (1994) → DKC2 (1995) → DKC3 (1996) → Returns (2010) → Tropical Freeze (2014). One continuous Kong family saga—no reboot branch reordering like Rayman or Spyro.
Full saga: SNES trilogy via Switch Online or NSO → Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (2025, Switch) or original Wii → Tropical Freeze on Switch. Modern-only: Returns HD → Tropical Freeze—lighter on Kremling lore but valid—FAQ trade-off.
Story & canon
Donkey Kong 64 (1999) is a 3D spin-off/sequel in the same era as the Country games—chronologically after DKC3, before Returns. It is not a Release or Story row here (different format). Optional for Kremling/K. Rool fans—FAQ.
Remasters & ports
Same game—Switch port (2018) adds Funky Kong mode and runs at 1080p/60fps on docked. Not a separate Release or Story row. Buy Switch version if you own current Nintendo hardware.
Optional & related
Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, King of Swing, and Bongo Blast are spin-offs—not Country Release or Story rows. They do not affect Tropical Freeze setup for most players.
