Final Fantasy spin-off timeline

This page is for players who already know numbered Final Fantasy exists and want the side library—not FF I–XVI. Release lists major console/handheld spin-offs from Tactics (1998) through Stranger of Paradise (2022). Story follows the only linked lanes that matter: Ivalice Tactics handhelds, the Crystal Chronicles family, then modern standalone Type-0 and optional Stranger of Paradise. Dissidia and World of Final Fantasy are crossover fanservice. Crisis Core and the Remake trilogy live on the Final Fantasy VII timeline; numbered entries on the Final Fantasy timeline. Mobile gacha stays FAQ-only.

Updated August 2026

Where to start

Choose Ivalice tactics for Tactics → Advance → A2. Choose Crystal duo for Crystal Chronicles + Crystal Bearers. Choose Modern action for Type-0 HD + optional Stranger of Paradise.

  • War of the Lions is the practical Tactics edition in 2026
  • Ring of Fates / Echoes of Time stay off the Crystal Essentials duo on purpose
  • Mobile titles (Opera Omnia, Record Keeper, etc.) stay FAQ-only

Release order

Ship dates for major FF spin-offs you can still discuss in 2026—Tactics and its handhelds, Crystal Chronicles titles, Dissidia fighters, Type-0 HD, World of Final Fantasy, and Stranger of Paradise. Numbered mainline and FFVII Remake/Crisis Core are separate pages.

  • Strategy fans: start with Final Fantasy Tactics (War of the Lions), then the Advance → A2 handhelds
  • Co-op / Crystal curious: Crystal Chronicles Remastered, then optional Crystal Bearers
  • Action FF: Type-0 HD or Stranger of Paradise—neither replaces numbered mainline
  • Dissidia is fighting-game fan service—skip on lore-first runs
  • Numbered games live on the Final Fantasy timeline
Story order tips

Linked fiction only: Ivalice TacticsTactics AdvanceTactics A2; Crystal ChroniclesCrystal Bearers (Ring/Echoes optional); then standalone Type-0; optional Stranger of Paradise. Dissidia/World are crossover brackets, not saga sequels.

  • Ivalice chain is tone-linked, not one continuous save file across PS1 → GBA → DS
  • Crystal Remastered replaces the GameCube co-op logistics for modern play
  • Dirge of Cerberus is VII Compilation optional—Remake path does not require it
  • On Story order, later optional crossovers may stay hidden until you reveal spoilers

FAQ

What counts as a spin-off here, Ivalice vs Crystal paths, Dissidia canon, and links to mainline FF / VII.

Play order

One strategy masterpiece: Final Fantasy Tactics — War of the Lions. Ivalice handhelds: add Tactics Advance then Tactics A2. Action: Type-0 HD or Stranger of Paradise. Co-op nostalgia: Crystal Chronicles Remastered. Do not try to “finish every Dissidia” before touching a numbered FF you actually want.

Story chains

Same Ivalice family, not one continuous campaign. The PS1 Tactics war and the GBA/DS “book world” tales share lore branding and tone. Play PS1 first for the classic; play Advance → A2 if you want the handheld clan arc.

What's excluded

Numbered single-player entries and Pixel Remasters live on the Final Fantasy timeline. VII Compilation vs Remake detail—including Crisis Core—lives on the Final Fantasy VII timeline. This page is spin-offs only.

Crisis Core is a VII Compilation pillar tracked on the Final Fantasy VII timeline beside Remake/Rebirth. Dirge of Cerberus appears here as an optional VII shooter spin-off for completists.
