When Square/Enix shipped each numbered Dragon Quest in the US—Dragon Warrior (1989) through Dragon Quest VII Reimagined (2026), plus HD-2D remakes of III and I & II. Dragon Quest X (Japan MMO) and XII (in development) are FAQ-only. Monsters / Builders spin-offs stay FAQ-only.

  • Newcomers 2026 → Dragon Quest XI S, or HD-2D III then I & II for Erdrick
  • Classic US path → Release tab shows when each number first hit North America
  • Modern remakes → DQ III HD-2D (2024) → I & II HD-2D (2025) → VII Reimagined (2026)

Story order tips

Most numbered games are standalone worlds. Connected Erdrick path: Dragon Quest III → I → II. Zenithian trilogy (IV → V → VI) shares light links. VII, VIII, IX, and XI are largely self-contained. Story rows follow that practical path—not one single planet chronology.

  • Erdrick trilogy: III → I → II (HD-2D versions preferred)
  • Zenithian: IV → V → VI (light links—optional as a block)

Release order

Release order is when each numbered Dragon Quest first launched in the US (1989–2026)—V and VI arrived late via DS remakes, so US Release order is not I→II→III…. Story order groups the Erdrick trilogy as III → I → II, then the Zenithian block IV → V → VI, then largely standalone VII, VIII, IX, and XI. Remakes share story slots with their originals.

Modern standalone: Dragon Quest XI S. Erdrick path: III HD-2D → I & II HD-2D. Classic 3D: Dragon Quest VIII. Long island epic: VII Reimagined (2026). You do not need every numbered game in sequence—most are separate worlds. Skip Dragon Quest X (Japan-only MMO).

Story & eras

In-fiction order is Dragon Quest III → I → II. III is the origin of the hero later called Erdrick; I and II follow descendants. On modern platforms play III HD-2D Remake (2024) then I & II HD-2D Remake (2025). US NES Release order shipped I and II before III—that is history, not story order.

Remakes & editions

III HD-2D (Nov 14, 2024) and I & II HD-2D (Oct 30, 2025) are the recommended way to play the Erdrick trilogy. They appear as Release rows; NES Dragon Warrior editions remain for history. VII Reimagined (Feb 5, 2026) likewise replaces the 2001 PS1 original for most players.

Optional & related

Dragon Quest X is a Japan-focused MMO—never fully localized for the West; FAQ-only, not a Release row here. Dragon Quest XII (announced; development restarted as Beyond Dreams per 2026 Square Enix updates) has no firm US date—it will get a Release row when it ships. Do not wait on XII to play XI or the HD-2D Erdrick games.
