Release order

Metroid Prime
GameCubeAction-adventureMainlinePrimeRetro Studios reinvented Metroid as a first-person GameCube epic on Tallon IV—scan everything, survive Phazon, and face Meta Ridley in isolation. Still the template for every later Prime chapter.
- Overview
- 2D Metroidvania logic in 3D with a scan visor, locked perspective immersion, and environmental storytelling instead of constant dialogue.
- In-game setting
- After Zero Mission on the full timeline; Phazon, Chozo Lore, and Meta Ridley open the Prime block that Echoes and Corruption continue.
- Should you play it?
- Buy Metroid Prime Remastered on Switch today; treat this entry as the 2002 original. Full Samus chronology sits on Metroid 2D.
- Release date
- US GameCube launch November 17, 2002—same US day as Metroid Fusion.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
GameCubeAction-adventureMainlinePrimeAether's light and dark worlds force ammo-managed beams and brutal difficulty spikes while Dark Samus steps out of Phazon's shadow. Direct sequel energy—harder, denser, and more puzzle-gated than Tallon IV.
- Overview
- Dual-dimension traversal with Light/Dark Suit gates and beam ammo economy that turns every shot into a resource choice.
- In-game setting
- Ing occupation of Aether; Dark Samus emerges as recurring antagonist heading into Corruption.
- Should you play it?
- Play after Prime (Remastered). No standalone Switch port as of 2026—GameCube disc or Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii.
- Release date
- US GameCube launch November 15, 2004. Prefer current digital editions when the original release is awkward to run.

Metroid Prime Hunters
Nintendo DSAction-adventureMainlinePrimeDS bounty-hunter free-for-all in the Alimbic cluster—short campaign, big multiplayer ambitions, and Sylux's first starring role. Optional between Prime and Echoes for lore tidy-up.
- Overview
- Stylus-aim arena shooter with rival hunters (Trace, Weavel, Noxus) sharing the Prime brand's first-person movement.
- In-game setting
- Alimbic artifacts race; Sylux rivalry plants seeds that Prime 4 later picks up. Use neighboring titles with Metroid Prime Hunters if you want full cast continuity.
- Should you play it?
- Optional before Echoes; worth a look before Prime 4 if you care about Sylux. Skip if you only want the core trilogy path.
- Release date
- US Nintendo DS launch March 20, 2006. Prefer current digital editions when the original release is awkward to run.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
WiiAction-adventureMainlinePrimeWii pointer aiming and multi-planet Phazon corruption close the original trilogy as Dark Samus pushes toward Phaaze. Motion controls and hub-ship travel make it the most cinematic Prime of the 2000s.
- Overview
- First Prime on Wii—pointer lock-on, Hypermode risk/reward, and planet-hopping via the Gunship instead of a single sealed world.
- In-game setting
- Norion, Bryyo, Elysia, and Phaaze finale end the 2002–2007 Dark Samus arc.
- Should you play it?
- Finish Remastered → Echoes → Corruption before Prime 4 for full first-person context. Trilogy disc is the convenient Wii package.
- Release date
- US Wii launch August 27, 2007; also in Metroid Prime Trilogy. Prefer current digital editions when the original release is awkward to run.
OptionalMetroid Prime: Federation Force
Nintendo 3DSSpin-offOptionalPrimeCo-op Federation marine missions wear the Prime label without starring Samus. Lore footnotes exist; most players treat it as a skippable spin-off between Corruption and later 2D Metroid.
- Overview
- Four-player mission structure and mech suits aim at party play instead of solitary exploration.
- In-game setting
- Optional Sylux-adjacent notes; does not replace Echoes or Corruption on the trilogy path.
- Should you play it?
- Skip for Prime story order. Keep the release-order titles only if you collect every Prime-branded title. Remasters and collections are usually easier than original hardware alone.
- Release date
- US Nintendo 3DS launch August 19, 2016. Prefer current digital editions when the original release is awkward to run.

Metroid Prime Remastered
SwitchRemasterPrimeSwitch HD rebuild of Tallon IV with dual-stick controls and modern presentation—same story as GameCube Prime, better way to play it in 2026. Default on-ramp for the Prime path.
- Overview
- Control modernization and visual rebuild without rewriting rooms or plot—pure remaster philosophy.
- In-game setting
- Identical story placement to Metroid Prime (2002)—Phazon discovery on Tallon IV.
- Should you play it?
- Start here instead of hunting GameCube hardware. Then Echoes → Corruption → optional Hunters → Prime 4. Remasters and collections are usually easier than original hardware alone.
- Release date
- US digital launch February 8, 2023; physical February 22, 2023 on Switch. Prefer current digital editions when the original release is awkward to run.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
SwitchSwitch 2Action-adventureMainlinePrimeRetro's long-awaited return sends Samus to Viewros with psychic tools and Sylux in pursuit. Playable standalone, but the full Samus timeline parks it after Other M and before Fusion on Metroid 2D.
- Overview
- Open-zone Prime structure, psychic abilities, and Switch 2 enhanced mode after an eighteen-year mainline gap.
- In-game setting
- Viewros expedition and Sylux confrontation—separate chapter after the Phazon trilogy's ending.
- Should you play it?
- Latest Prime entry (Dec 2025). Trilogy helps context; not required to boot the game. Cross-check 2D order on the main Metroid page.
- Release date
- US launch December 4, 2025 on Switch and Switch 2. Prefer current digital editions when the original release is awkward to run.

Play order
Most players today: Metroid Prime Remastered (2023) → Prime 2: Echoes (2004, GameCube) → Prime 3: Corruption (2007, Wii or Trilogy) → Prime 4: Beyond (2025). Release historians: Prime (2002) → Echoes (2004) → Hunters (2006, optional) → Corruption (2007) → Federation Force (2016, skip) → Remastered (2023) → Prime 4 (2025). Hunters slots between Prime and Echoes in lore—brief campaign, introduces Sylux.
Same Tallon IV story—Remastered (2023) adds HD visuals and dual-stick controls on Switch. One release-order titles for the remaster launch; Story order treats it as interchangeable with Metroid Prime (2002). Buy Remastered unless you collect GameCube discs.
Canon & Metroid hub
On the full Samus timeline (main Metroid games timeline Story tab), Nintendo places Prime 4: Beyond after Other M and before Metroid Fusion—even though Prime 4 is largely standalone in another dimension. After Prime 4, continue Fusion → Dread on the main page for the 2D epilogue. You can play Prime 4 without Fusion, but not the other way around if you want zero spoilers.
