Updated July 2026

Release order

When each Paramount Sonic film or Knuckles series premiered in the US—one row per theatrical film or full series drop. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (2027) stays FAQ-only until it ships.

  • Recommended fiction path → Sonic (2020) → Sonic 2 (2022) → Knuckles (2024) → Sonic 3 (2024)
  • Release-only binge → films in premiere order; insert Knuckles after Sonic 2 for canon flow
  • Game players → treat movies as a separate adaptation; no required watch order before playing Frontiers
  • Sonic 4 (March 2027) and future spin-offs → FAQ until release rows are added
Story order tips

When events happen in Paramount's cinematic fiction—present-day Earth from Sonic's arrival through the Shadow arc in film 3. Knuckles slots between the second and third films in story order, not release order.

  • Film saga → Sonic arrives on Earth (film 1) → Robotnik returns with Knuckles (film 2) → Knuckles trains Wade (series) → Shadow and Project Shadow (film 3)
  • Knuckles → optional but canon side story between films 2 and 3—six episodes, ~2.5 hours total
  • Do not merge Paramount Earth fiction into Sega game Story rows on /sonic
  • Sonic X, Prime, Boom, and IDW comics → separate media—see FAQ

FAQ

Watch vs premiere order, Knuckles between Sonic 2 and 3, game canon vs movies, and upcoming Sonic 4.

After Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and before Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Paramount and Sega marketed it as filling the gap between those films. All six episodes dropped April 26, 2024—about two and a half hours total.

Canon & games

The Sonic games timeline (/sonic) covers Sega's official video game release and story order from 1991 through Frontiers. This page is Paramount films and Knuckles TV only.

No. Paramount's Cinematic World of Sonic is a separate Earth-based adaptation. It borrows characters and motifs (Knuckles, Shadow, Master Emerald) but does not follow Sonic Adventure, Frontiers, or any single game plot. You can play the games without watching the films.
