Release & story order

Sonic timeline

Sonic the Hedgehog from the 1991 Genesis original through Frontiers and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds—US release dates, Sega's official story placement (Sonic CD between Sonic 1 and 2, one unified timeline), and FAQ for handheld chapters, Sonic '06, and spin-offs.

Updated June 2026

Release order

When Sega shipped each main platformer and major 3D chapter—Genesis (1991) through Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (2025), with Sonic Origins (2022) as a remaster bundle row, not a new story chapter.

  • Newcomers → Sonic Mania or Sonic Frontiers depending on 2D vs 3D taste; Sonic Origins bundles the four Classic games
  • Classic fans → Release order from 1991 Genesis through Sonic 3 & Knuckles, then Mania or Origins remasters
  • Modern 3D arc → Adventure → Adventure 2 → Heroes → Unleashed → Colors → Sonic X Shadow Generations → Lost World → Forces → Frontiers
  • Skip Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic '06 unless you want every mainline chapter—both are divisive
  • Racing only → Team Sonic Racing (2019) or Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (2025)—optional for platformer canon
Story order tips

Sega's official timeline (2024 site update, reinforced by Sonic Origins story mode) uses one story world—Classic and Modern Sonic share the same setting. Classic path: Sonic CD between Sonic 1 and 2, then Mania and Superstars, Sonic 4. Modern path: Adventure through Frontiers. Handheld Advance/Rush/Battle chapters fit between Adventure 2 and Unleashed—see FAQ, not Story rows here.

  • Classic story path: Sonic 1 → Sonic CD → Sonic 2 → Sonic 3 & Knuckles → Mania → Superstars → Sonic 4 Episodes I & II
  • Modern story path on this page: Adventure → Adventure 2 → Heroes → Shadow → Unleashed → Colors → Generations (via Sonic X Shadow Generations) → Lost World → Forces → Frontiers
  • Completionists: insert GBA Advance 2 between Adventure 2 and Heroes; GBA Battle after Shadow; GBA Advance 3 after Battle; DS Rush/Rush Adventure around Sonic '06—exact Rush vs Rivals order is debated
  • One timeline only—Mania and Forces Classic segments are the same Sonic, not a parallel universe (confirmed 2024)
  • Sonic '06 happens then is erased; Sonic Origins confirms CD order but is not its own lore chapter—play the four Classic games inside it

FAQ

Release vs story order, unified Classic/Modern timeline, Sonic CD placement, handheld Advance/Rush chain, Sonic '06, Origins bundle, and what we leave off (Boom, comics, mobile).

Release order

Release order is when Sega shipped each game in the US (1991–2025). Story order follows Sega's official franchise timeline on the Japanese Sonic site (2024 refresh)—most notably Sonic CD between Sonic 1 and 2, Mania/Superstars before Sonic 4, and one unified Classic/Modern continuity. Use Release for hardware nostalgia; use Story for Sega's mainline canon sequence. Handheld and spin-offs are explained in FAQ, not Story rows.

Story & canon

Release order: Sonic 2 (1992) shipped before Sonic CD (1993). Story order: Sega's official timeline and Sonic Origins story mode place Sonic CD between Sonic 1 and Sonic 2—Metal Sonic and Little Planet happen before Tails joins on West Side Island. Both orders are listed on this page.

Sega's official timeline still includes Sonic '06—events in Soleanna happen, then the ending wipes that future from the active story. Characters like Silver return in later games with different context. Play it for lore curiosity or skip with a summary; Modern story continues cleanly from Unleashed onward.

No. Sega's 2024 official timeline and lead writer Ian Flynn have confirmed a single continuity—Sonic Mania, Sonic Superstars, and the Classic segments in Sonic Forces all take place in the same world as Modern Sonic, not a parallel "Classic dimension." The Phantom Ruby links Mania to Forces directly. Older fan charts that split Mania into its own universe are outdated.

These handheld chapters appear in Sega's extended official timeline but are omitted from Story rows here to keep the page focused on home-console mainline platformers. When you want every lore beat: Sonic Advance (optional, often before Adventure 1) → Adventure → Adventure 2 → Sonic Advance 2 → Heroes (introduces Omega) → Shadow the Hedgehog → Sonic Battle (introduces Emerl) → Sonic Advance 3 (features Gemerl, Emerl's successor) → Sonic '06 and related spin-offs → Unleashed onward. Shadow already knows his ARK backstory in Battle, so Battle must follow Shadow's game.
