Release order

When Nintendo shipped each western mainline chapter—Fire Emblem (2003 GBA) through Engage (2023 Switch). Fates Birthright/Conquest/Revelation, Warriors spin-offs, and Japan-only remakes are FAQ-only—not extra Release rows.

  • Newcomers → Three Houses or Engage on Switch—modern onboarding
  • Classic GBA → Fire Emblem (2003) → Sacred Stones
  • Tellius → Path of Radiance then Radiant Dawn—FAQ for Ike's arc
  • Fates three routes—one Release row—FAQ for Birthright/Conquest/Revelation
Story order tips

Fire Emblem uses many disconnected worlds—not one linear saga. Release and Story rows match for western mainline games; within-world chronology (Tellius, Archanea) is FAQ. Each chapter is mostly standalone.

  • Tellius canon: Path of Radiance → Radiant Dawn—play in Release order
  • Archanea thread: Shadow Dragon → Awakening (distant future)—FAQ gaps
  • Echoes is Valentia—separate from Shadow Dragon row
  • Engage references past heroes—optional lore rabbit hole—FAQ

FAQ

Release vs story order, where to start, routes, and spin-offs.

Release order

Release order follows US launch dates from Fire Emblem (2003) through Engage (2023). Story order uses the same western mainline rows—Fire Emblem spans separate worlds (Elibe, Tellius, Archanea, Fodlan, etc.), not one continuous timeline. Play Release order for history; use FAQ for within-world chronology like Tellius.

Modern Switch: Three Houses (deep academy sim + tactics) or Engage (faster, nostalgia-focused). Classic: Awakening (3DS) or Fire Emblem (2003 GBA) via NSO/VC. Tellius fans: Path of Radiance → Radiant Dawn—harder to find hardware—FAQ ports.

Story & canon

Yes—the clearest two-game story arc in the franchise. Path of Radiance (2005) introduces Ike and Tellius; Radiant Dawn (2007) continues the war. Play in Release order on both tabs. Other FE games are different worlds.

Fire Emblem Fates is one Release/Story row with three campaigns: Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation (DLC/upgrade). Common play order: Birthright or Conquest first, then Revelation for the full plot. Not three separate timeline rows.

Optional & related

New Mystery of the Emblem (FE12), Genealogy of the Holy War (FE4), Thracia 776 (FE5), and Binding Blade (FE6) had no western retail release—FAQ only, not Release rows. Western Fire Emblem (2003) is FE7 (Blazing Blade), a prequel to Binding Blade.
