  • HD1 optional → top-down co-op on PS4 / PC if you want the 2015 origin

Shared Managed Democracy sci-fi satire. Helldivers 2 is fully playable without Helldivers 1—lore echoes the first game but no required plot homework.

Release order

Release order is when Helldivers (2015) and Helldivers 2 (2024) launched in the US. Story order follows the Managed Democracy setting—HD1 first for satire context, then HD2. HD2 is not a tight narrative sequel; either order works for gameplay.

Recommended for most players: Helldivers 2 (PS5 / PC). Add Helldivers (2015) only if you want the top-down origin or more Super Earth jokes. You do not need HD1 to enjoy HD2.

Story & setting

Yes. Helldivers 2 is designed as a standalone entry—same universe and tone, new third-person format. HD1 adds optional context (faction names, propaganda gags) but no required plot beats.

Helldivers 2 continues the Managed Democracy setting and galactic war fantasy, but it is not a character-driven direct sequel to HD1 missions. Think shared universe and upgraded war—not a cliffhanger continuation.
