When EA Visceral shipped each Dead Space chapter in the US—Dead Space (2008) through Dead Space 3 (2013), plus Extraction (2009) and the 2023 Remake. Ignition, the mobile game, and animated films are FAQ-only.

  • Newcomers 2026 → Dead Space Remake, then 2 → 3 (+ Awakened)
  • Full ship history → Release tab: 2008 → Extraction → 2 → 3 → Remake
  • Classic discs → Original Dead Space still works; Remake is the usual buy
  • Skip Ignition / mobile / films on a first Necromorph pass

Fiction path: Extraction (Ishimura prequel) → Dead Space / Remake (same Isaac arc) → Dead Space 2 (Sprawl) → Dead Space 3 + Awakened (Tau Volantis). Ignition sits between 1 and 2 as a short optional bridge—FAQ only.

  • Core Isaac path: Dead Space (or Remake) → 2 → 3 → Awakened

Release order

Release order is when each Dead Space game launched in the US (2008–2023)—including Extraction and the Remake. Story order follows Isaac's fiction path: Extraction (optional prequel) → Dead Space / Remake → Dead Space 2 → Dead Space 3 (+ Awakened). The Remake retells the 2008 game; Ignition, mobile titles, and films stay FAQ-only.

Recommended: Dead Space Remake → Dead Space 2 → Dead Space 3, then Awakened DLC. Optional lore first: Extraction before the Remake. You do not need the 2008 original if you own the Remake. Skip Ignition, the mobile game, and the animated films on a first pass.

Story & canon

Extraction (2009, Wii; later PS3 HD) is an on-rails prequel set around the Aegis VII / Ishimura outbreak before Isaac's story in Dead Space 1. It appears on both Release and Story tabs but is optional—play it for extra colony context, or jump straight into the Remake.

Remakes & editions

The 2023 Remake (Motive Studio) retells the Ishimura campaign with modern visuals and systems—PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (January 27, 2023). For most players it replaces the 2008 game. Both share one Story-order slot; this page keeps the 2008 row for Release history. You do not need both for the plot.

Awakened (March 2013 DLC) is a short epilogue after Dead Space 3's base ending—often treated as the trilogy's true close. It is FAQ-only (not a separate Release row) but recommended if you finish Dead Space 3 and want the full Isaac ending. Buy a Dead Space 3 edition that includes Awakened when possible.
