When Konami shipped each Silent Hill chapter in the US—Silent Hill (1999) through Silent Hill f (2025), including Origins, the Western-era games, The Short Message, and the Silent Hill 2 Remake. Book of Memories, Ascension, and film adaptations are FAQ-only.

  • Newcomers 2026 → Silent Hill 2 Remake, or Silent Hill f as a standalone modern start
  • Classic Team Silent → Silent Hill → 2 → 3 → 4 (or Remake instead of 2001 SH2)
  • Harry/Heather lore → Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3
  • Skip Homecoming / Downpour / Shattered Memories on a first pass unless collecting every fog town

No single rigid canon. Story order here follows a practical fiction path: Silent Hill f (1960s Japan, standalone) → Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 (Harry/Heather), with Silent Hill 2 as its own James arc and Silent Hill 4 loosely after. Homecoming, Shattered Memories, and Downpour stay on Release as optional.

Release order

Release order is when each Silent Hill game launched in the US (1999–2025)—including Remake, The Short Message, and Western-era titles. Story order is a practical fiction path: Silent Hill f (1960s standalone) → Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 2 (James, parallel) → Silent Hill 3 → Silent Hill 4. Konami never published one official chart; Homecoming, Shattered Memories, and Downpour stay on Release only.

Modern James path: Silent Hill 2 Remake (standalone). Modern new chapter: Silent Hill f (standalone, 1960s Japan). Classic Team Silent: Silent Hill → Silent Hill 2 (or Remake) → Silent Hill 3 → optional Silent Hill 4. Harry/Heather lore: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. Skip Homecoming, Downpour, and Shattered Memories on a first pass.

Story & canon

Harry/Heather path: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 share Order/Alessa continuity. James path: Silent Hill 2 (and its Remake) is self-contained. Silent Hill f is a new Japan-set story—references the series thematically but does not require prior games. Silent Hill 4 ties loosely to town lore. Western entries (Homecoming, Downpour, Shattered Memories) are mostly separate.

Silent Hill f launched September 25, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is set in 1960s Japan (Ebisugaoka) and works as a standalone chapter—listed first on Story order by fiction year only. You do not need Silent Hill 1–4 or the Remake first. Play it alone, or after Remake if you want classic fog-town horror first.

Remakes & editions

The 2024 Remake (Bloober Team) retells James's story with modern visuals and controls—PS5/PC October 8, 2024; Xbox Series later in 2025. For most players it replaces the 2001 game. Both share one Story-order slot; this page keeps the 2001 row for Release history and the Remake as the modern buy. You do not need both.
