FAQ
Release vs story order, where to start, remasters, and expansions.
Release order
Release order follows US launch dates: Xenoblade Chronicles (2012) → Chronicles X (2015) → Chronicles 2 (2017) → Chronicles 3 (2022). Story order is the connected trilogy: XC1 → XC2 → XC3—excluding Chronicles X, which is a separate universe on Mira with no plot link to the Aegis saga finale.
Full saga: Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (Switch, XC1 remaster) → Chronicles 2 → Chronicles 3. Skip XC1? XC3 has a recap mode but XC1 + XC2 pay off more. Chronicles X anytime as optional sci-fi—different story. One game only: DE or XC2 as standalone JRPGs—valid—FAQ.
Story & canon
Chronicles X (2015, Wii U) is on Release order only—a standalone sci-fi game on Mira with Skells and a custom avatar. It does not continue Shulk's story and is not required for XC2 or XC3. Treat it like a parallel branch, not Story order.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 directly references and merges lore from XC1 and XC2. You can play XC3 alone with in-game recaps, but Story order is XC1 → XC2 → XC3 for full emotional and plot payoff. Chronicles X does not matter for XC3.
Remasters & DLC
Definitive Edition (2020, Switch) remasters Xenoblade Chronicles (2012 Wii)—same story, modern visuals and QoL. Not a separate Release or Story row—buy DE instead of Wii hardware. Future Connected epilogue is bundled—FAQ bonus chapter after main XC1 credits.
