Sonic R
SaturnPCRacing3DSonic R debuted console Sonic racing on Sega Saturn with on-foot sprinting through 3D courses—famous for Radiant Emerald and the Tails Doll meme. It is a short retro curiosity, not the kart formula later fans expect.
- Overview
- Early 3D Sonic racer emphasizing running and exploration shortcuts over item-box karts.
- In-game setting
- First major console Sonic racing spin-off—not kart-based. Next racing eras: Riders hoverboards (2006+) then All-Stars/TSR karts.
- Should you play it?
- Retro first stop—play for Saturn history, then jump to Sonic Riders or modern kart (Team Sonic Racing / CrossWorlds).
- Release date
- US Sega Saturn launch November 18, 1997; PC ports followed. No modern remaster as of 2026—legacy hardware or compilations where offered.

Sonic Riders
GameCubePS2XboxPCRacingHoverboardSonic Riders launched Extreme Gear hoverboard racing across GameCube, PS2, Xbox, and PC—introducing the Babylon Rogues and air-trick racing. It starts the Riders sub-line, separate from later kart games.
- Overview
- Board types, air tricks, and story mode with Jet, Wave, and Storm.
- In-game setting
- Starts the Riders trilogy → Zero Gravity → Free Riders. Separate from kart racers on this page. Platformer timeline: Sonic games.
- Should you play it?
- Play before Zero Gravity if you want the full Riders mechanics arc; story is light. Not required for Sonic games platformer canon.
- Release date
- US launch February 21, 2006 on GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity
WiiPS2RacingHoverboardSonic Riders: Zero Gravity continues Extreme Gear with gravity-shift controls on Wii and PS2. Meteor-tech boards replace the first game's Air system—same light Babylon fiction, not platformer canon.
- Overview
- Gravity control and Wii motion options refresh board racing. Direct mechanical sequel to Sonic Riders with continued Rogues presence.
- In-game setting
- Direct Riders sequel. Trilogy closer: Sonic Free Riders (Kinect). Related Sega hardware: Sega consoles.
- Should you play it?
- Middle Riders chapter—play after Riders for continuity of feel; fine solo. Finish with Free Riders only if you own Kinect. Kart path remains separate (Transformed, TSR, CrossWorlds).
- Release date
- US launch January 22, 2008 on Wii and PlayStation 2.

Sonic Free Riders
Xbox 360RacingHoverboardKinectSonic Free Riders closes the Riders trilogy as an Xbox 360 Kinect exclusive—full-body boarding with no traditional controller racing. Mechanically dated; skip unless you collect every Extreme Gear title.
- Overview
- Kinect-only control scheme attempts motion Extreme Gear. Same board-racing brand as Riders / Zero Gravity, different input experiment.
- In-game setting
- Closes Riders trilogy. Kart era continues with All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012). Films/media: Sonic movies.
- Should you play it?
- Optional trilogy finale—skip without losing platformer lore on Sonic games. Next racing milestone for most players: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
- Release date
- US Xbox 360 launch November 4, 2010—requires Kinect sensor. No multiplatform rerelease.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
PS3Xbox 360Wii U3DSPCVitaRacingKartCrossoverSonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is Sumo Digital's Sega crossover kart racer—cars transform into boats and planes mid-race. Sonic leads marketing, but guest franchises fill the grid.
- Overview
- Transforming tracks (kart/boat/plane) and a deep single-player World Tour.
- In-game setting
- Sega all-stars crossover—not Sonic-only. Bridge between Riders and Team Sonic Racing. Compare Nintendo karts on Mario Kart.
- Should you play it?
- Best classic kart stop before Team Sonic Racing. Not on the Sonic games platformer Story tab. Play anytime after Riders era; still sold on PC stores.
- Release date
- US launch November 16, 2012 across PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, 3DS, PC, and Vita—roster guests vary by platform.

Team Sonic Racing
SwitchPS4Xbox OnePCRacingKartTeam Sonic Racing is Sumo Digital's modern team-boost kart racer with a light story campaign across Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Still the go-to pre-CrossWorlds kart if you want cooperative drafting.
- Overview
- Team item sharing and draft boosting reward group play over pure free-for-all.
- In-game setting
- Light story optional on extended Sonic lists. Successor kart: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (2025). Related: Sonic games, Mario Kart.
- Should you play it?
- Best modern kart entry before CrossWorlds—either works standalone. No requirement to finish TSR before CrossWorlds. Platformer canon remains optional on Sonic games.
- Release date
- US launch May 21, 2019 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
SwitchSwitch 2PS4PS5Xbox OneXbox Series X|SPCRacingKartSonic Racing: CrossWorlds is Sega's latest kart racer (2025)—cross-world zones, guest drivers, and multiplatform launch including Switch 2. Racing-only: it does not move platformer canon past Frontiers.
- Overview

- In-game setting
- Latest Sonic racer entry. Does not replace Sonic games mainline. Compare party karts: Mario Kart.
- Should you play it?
- Current racing capstone as of 2026—prefer this for new kart purchases. TSR remains fine on budget.
- Release date
- Worldwide launch September 25, 2025 on Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Play order
Casual kart fans: Team Sonic Racing (2019) or Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (2025)—either works standalone. Complete US release run: Sonic R (1997) → Riders (2006) → Zero Gravity (2008) → Free Riders (2010, Kinect) → All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012) → TSR (2019) → CrossWorlds (2025). Skip Free Riders unless you own Kinect.
New purchases: CrossWorlds (2025) is Sega's latest kart racer with cross-franchise tracks. TSR (2019) is still fine on budget—similar team-boost kart design. No story requirement to play TSR before CrossWorlds; both are optional for platformer canon.
Canon & platformers
No shared plot links the racers—Story order mirrors Release for history only. Team Sonic Racing has a short campaign; Riders has light Babylon Rogues fiction between its three games, but none of it is required for the platformer saga on Sonic games timeline. Treat each game as standalone unless you are collecting the Riders trilogy.
