    Sonic R

    SaturnPCRacing3D

    Overview
Early 3D Sonic racer emphasizing running and exploration shortcuts over item-box karts.
    In-game setting
First major console Sonic racing spin-off—not kart-based. Next racing eras: Riders hoverboards (2006+) then All-Stars/TSR karts.
    Should you play it?
Retro first stop—play for Saturn history, then jump to Sonic Riders or modern kart (Team Sonic Racing / CrossWorlds).

  3. Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

    Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

    In-game setting
Direct Riders sequel. Trilogy closer: Sonic Free Riders (Kinect). Related Sega hardware: Sega consoles.

  4. Sonic Free Riders

    Sonic Free Riders

    Xbox 360RacingHoverboardKinect

    Overview
Kinect-only control scheme attempts motion Extreme Gear. Same board-racing brand as Riders / Zero Gravity, different input experiment.
    In-game setting
Closes Riders trilogy. Kart era continues with All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012). Films/media: Sonic movies.

Successor to TSR with cross-franchise track themes and online focus. Positions Sonic kart racing as a live multiplatform product rather than a one-console experiment.
    In-game setting
Latest Sonic racer entry. Does not replace Sonic games mainline. Compare party karts: Mario Kart.
    Should you play it?
Current racing capstone as of 2026—prefer this for new kart purchases. TSR remains fine on budget.

FAQ

Racing vs platformer canon, Riders vs kart era, All-Stars crossover, TSR vs CrossWorlds, and links to the main Sonic games timeline.

Play order

See the Sonic games timeline for Classic and Modern platformers, Sega's official story order, Sonic CD placement, and Frontiers. This page covers racing spin-offs only.

New purchases: CrossWorlds (2025) is Sega's latest kart racer with cross-franchise tracks. TSR (2019) is still fine on budget—similar team-boost kart design. No story requirement to play TSR before CrossWorlds; both are optional for platformer canon.

Canon & platformers

No shared plot links the racers—Story order mirrors Release for history only. Team Sonic Racing has a short campaign; Riders has light Babylon Rogues fiction between its three games, but none of it is required for the platformer saga on Sonic games timeline. Treat each game as standalone unless you are collecting the Riders trilogy.
